At this point it seems like everyone knows the name Donald Sterling. If you don’t, well, here we go. Donald Sterling, Owner of the Clippers(hopefully not for long) has been taking a lot of heat lately for the comments he made to his mistress(V. Stiviano) on Magic Johnson and some shots at the entire Black community, it seems. Some remarks like “I support them and give them food, and clothes, and cars, and houses. Who gives it to them? Does someone else give it to them? Do I know that I have—Who makes the game? Do I make the game, or do they make the game? Is there 30 owners, that created the league?“ and “you can sleep with them, bring them to the house, do anything with them, except be out in public with them and don’t bring them to my games.“ Him referring to African-Americans as ‘them’ or ‘those people.’ So at that point he had dug a big enough hole for himself, right? Well, that’s the wrong answer. A couple weeks later he did an interview with Anderson Cooper saying that he was asking for forgiveness, but about 10 minutes after that he started talking about Magic Johnson again. This time he was saying how Magic Johnson is such a bad person for what took place over 30 years ago and what seemed to be the lifestyle in the 80’s. Saying things like “he’s not a good role model” for what he had did and the fact that he has the HIV virus. Donald isn’t exactly helping his cause at this point.
After all of that said and done Adam Silver, the Commissioner of the NBA came out in a press conference in Memphis before the start of one of the Grizzlies games stating that he was “banning Mr. Sterling for life from being able to make any more basketball operation decisions, roster changes” etc. Silver also came out and said he would fine Sterling $2.5 Million Dollars in which Sterling would not pay, because why would he? A couple weeks after that Sterling still saying he has no intention of turning over the team to sell the league comes out with a plan in which written down in the NBA laws. This stating that if 3/4 the leagues owners vote Sterling out he can and will be removed as the owner of the Clippers. Recent talks have made it seem that almost all owners are for this action. With all of this happening, on Monday, ESPN reported that the NBA had charged Sterling with damaging the league with his racist comments and set a hearing for June 3, after which other team owners will vote to decide the future of his ownership of the Clippers. So Sterling still being in the sinking ship that he put himself in was still in the mindset that he had no plans on selling the team, until recently.
Donald’s wife, Shelly Sterling was still wanting to keep her 50% in the team if after the league chose to vote Sterling out. She was putting up a case for the whole thing and at one point was in the talks of filing for a divorce against Donald to freeze this whole transaction so she could figure it all out, but today Donald came out(reported by ESPN) saying that he has gave her the green light to go the NBA and start negotiations on selling the team. Finally, it seem things are making a right turn for the Clippers Organization, Staff, Players and most importantly, the fans.
